Leadership discussion

Florida SouthWestern State College

The person that was hired for the News Press, Mike Jung, seems qualified for the position that he has taken up. His past work experience allows him to take up the job because he has had experience with newspapers in the past (Williams, 2015). There are several different types of leadership concepts that come to mind when reading this article, but there are three that stand out above the rest. These three leadership concepts are the role of being a figurehead, the role of being an entrepreneur, and being a coach and motivator (DuBrin, 2013). Mike Jung does these three in a fashion that inspires trust.

Leadership can be defined as, “the ability to inspire confidence and support among people who are needed to achieve organizational goals (DuBrin, 2013, p. 2).” Mike Jung does this in three ways. He is a figurehead to the company because he actively engages in certain activities, such as running to help build obesity awareness (Williams, 2015). Mike Jung is an entrepreneur because he suggests new ideas by promoting innovative thinking (Williams, 2015). His role as a motivator stands out because he takes the lead and inspires his employees by listening to them and finding great employees (Williams, 2015). The employees in turn can break down the message that Jung is trying to send them when he inspires them into two parts, framing and rhetorical crafting (Conger, 1991). These two parts help employees identify the meaning in their leader’s message and a sense of direction (Conger, 1991). Together with these two parts the employees can take that message and apply it to their place of work.
